Prof. Indika Gawarammana

Professor, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka

Prof. Gawarammana's educational background includes an MBBS with Honors from the University of Peradeniya, MD from the University of Colombo, and MRCP from the Royal College of Physicians, UK. He earned his FRCPE from the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh and a PhD from the Australian National University, Canberra. He also holds a Good Clinical Practice (GCP) certification obtained in 2021.

 

Prof. Gawarammana has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the Presidential Award for Outstanding Scientific Publications (2003-2016), the Australian Leadership Award (Sri Lanka, 2008), the NRC Merit Award for Scientific Publications (2014), and the Research Excellence Award (2021). He also received the Tier Four Research Award from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka.

 

He leads several significant research initiatives, including the Research and Innovation for Global Health Transformation (RIGHT) Programme, aimed at preventing deaths from acute poisoning in low- and middle-income countries, funded by NIHR with a grant of £5.0 million. Other notable grants include NHMRC funding for educational interventions in rural Asian hospitals and various projects related to snakebite antivenom development.

 

His research focuses on reducing mortality from self-poisoning and advancing toxicology research through training future researchers. One of his key ambitions is to develop commercially available, species-specific antivenoms for Sri Lankan snake species.

 

Prof. Gawarammana's scholarly contributions are well-regarded, with a total of 3,793 citations and an h-index of 32, reflecting his significant impact in the field of toxicology.
